Philip Waddilove

Philip’s career in credit began with a simple newspaper ad. With a strong background in mathematics, he joined a graduate training programme and stepped into the world of financial services as a junior analyst. From these early days, Philip’s curiosity and analytical mindset led him to discover the intellectually stimulating opportunities within finance and credit. Now a member of the faculty at the Global Institute of Credit Professionals and Fitch Learning, here he reflects on his career in corporate banking.

What inspired you to choose a career in credit?

Philip launched his career in London just before the financial crisis. Over time, he gravitated toward corporate finance and advisory roles, drawn by the challenge of problem-solving and the complexity of structuring deals.

The skills for a great credit professional

Philip believes that a successful credit professional skillfully balances analytical precision with interpersonal savvy.

Pointing to certifications like those offered by the GICP as a great way to build foundational knowledge, Philip recommends professionals pursue relevant qualifications to strengthen their credit expertise.

Career-defining achievements

Philip highlights acquisition finance as his most significant role, recalling the thrill of managing large underwriting commitments and navigating the intricate exposures involved. He relished responsibilities like establishing plausible capital structures and evaluating market conditions to predict capital market events.  However, he enjoyed the sense of achievement when his bank made multi-billion-dollar commitments.

Beyond his technical and strategic successes, Philip finds great satisfaction in mentoring junior colleagues.

Addressing industry challenges

Corporate finance is not without its challenges. Philip acknowledges the high-pressure nature of the field, especially at the analyst or associate level. “It’s important to remain self-aware,” he advises. Striking a balance between ambition and self-care is vital in a fast-paced environment.
